MATER

Maters latest circular furniture design produced in plastic ocean waste, Nova Sea Chair, made of 96 % fishnets collected from the world’s oceans to protect and support 'Life Below Water' (SDG 14). "Yet another milestone on our commitment to a circular, sustainable business model." The sustainable choice of fabric offers the same high quality, superior durability and exceptional technical performance as conventional polyester fabrics but with a significantly lower environmental impact.

Nova Sea Chair is based on the aesthetics from the Nova Chair, designed by the Danish design studio ARDE. The chair is characterised by its elegant silhouette, contrasting light metal frames and seat made from fishnets and recycled ocean plastic waste. The chair is developed through a collaboration between Mater, ARDE and the exclusive five-star hotel Villa Copenhagen, opening in the summer of 2020 in the heart of Copenhagen.

"The Launch of Nova Sea Chair is yet another milestone on our commitment to a circular, sustainable business model. During the next years we are launching several key design pieces within furniture and lighting that is developed with the newest circular production criteria." - Founder and CEO, Henrik Marstrand.

Nova Sea Chair is designed for disassembly - which means that every part of the chair can be recycled, made to support innovative solutions to prevent pollution of the world's oceans in collaboration with the Danish cleantech recycling company Plastix, specialists in converting fibres, primarily used fishnets, and one of the leading specialists within injection moulding of plastic items, Martin Munkebo.

Each Nova Sea Chair holds 2.75 kilos of discarded fishnets compared to virgin equivalents and saves the planet for 4.7 kilo CO2 emissions, and thereby supporting "Responsible Consumption and Production" (SDG 12), "Climate Action" (SDG 13) and "Partnership for the Goals" (SDGs 17)

The chair comes in four different versions: with or without armrests and with or without an upholstered seat. The seat is upholstered with fabrics made from 98% post-consumer recycled polyester by the Danish textile manufacturer Gabriel, is certified in accordance with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 and has the EU Ecolabel.
